You know the feeling. It's Sunday afternoon, and somewhere between lunch and dinner, your stomach does that little drop.
Monday's coming.
Suddenly your brain starts running through everything waiting for you. The emails. The appointments. The lunches. The school stuff. The work stuff. The washing you didn't get to. The thing you forgot to reply to on Friday.
The weekend isn't even over yet, but mentally, you're already halfway into Monday morning.
We're not going to tell you to meditate it away or 'reframe your mindset'.
The Sunday scaries are pretty normal. Your brain is simply clocking that the slower, more spacious part of the week is ending and another full one is about to begin.
And sometimes that feeling isn't really about Monday at all.
It's about everything that feels unfinished, everything you're trying to remember, and that slightly overwhelming sense that the week is about to start before you feel ready for it.
Which is why a little Sunday reset can help.
Not because you need to spend your Sunday getting ahead, or because every part of your life needs to be perfectly organised.
But because doing one or two small things today can make tomorrow feel just that little bit lighter.
One of the easiest places to start is with a brain dump.
Grab a notebook, your Notes app, a scrap of paper – whatever is easiest – and write down everything that's floating around in your head.
Things you need to do. People you need to reply to. Appointments you need to make. Things you need to remember. Even tiny jobs like buying toothpaste or returning something.
You don't even need to organise the list straight away.
Sometimes overwhelm isn't caused by having too much to do. It's caused by trying to remember all of it at once.
Getting it out of your head and somewhere you can see it can instantly make things feel a little more manageable.
It can also help to spend ten minutes looking at the week ahead.
Check your calendar and actually see what's coming.
Is there a particularly busy day?
An appointment you'd forgotten about?
A night where dinner needs to be easy?
Something happening later in the week that you'll need to prepare for beforehand?
This isn't about planning every hour. It's simply about removing some of the surprises.
Knowing what's coming gives you the chance to make little adjustments before you're already in the thick of it.
Maybe Tuesday is packed, so you decide not to add anything extra that night.
Maybe you've got an early start on Wednesday, so you get a few things ready the night before.
Sometimes making a week feel less overwhelming isn't about doing less overall. It's about not asking everything of yourself at the same time.
Then think about Monday morning itself.
What part usually feels the most rushed or chaotic?
Is there one tiny thing you could do now that would make it easier?
Maybe it's prepping breakfast or lunch. Putting the kids' bags by the door. Choosing what you're wearing. Filling up your water bottle. Clearing the kitchen bench. Making sure the car has fuel.
None of these things are particularly groundbreaking, but that's kind of the point.
A calmer week is often built from very ordinary little decisions.
It's something we come back to a lot at Retreat Yourself – looking after yourself doesn't always need to be a big event. Sometimes it's simply doing one small thing that makes life feel a little easier.
The same goes for your space.
You absolutely do not need to spend your Sunday deep-cleaning the entire house.
But resetting one area can make a surprising difference to how Monday feels.
Clear the kitchen bench. Tidy the lounge room. Put the clean washing away. Clear your desk.
Choose one space that tends to make you feel more settled when it's in order, then stop there.
Yes, stop.
The rest of the house will survive until tomorrow.
It can also be useful to look at everything on your list and ask yourself what actually matters this week.
Not what would be nice to finish.
Not everything that's been sitting on your list for the past three months.
What genuinely needs your attention?
When everything feels equally important, everything feels overwhelming.
Giving yourself permission to focus on a few real priorities can make the whole week feel a little less noisy.
And while you're looking at your calendar, make sure you're not only filling it with things you have to do.
Put something good in there too.
A walk with a friend.
Your favourite class.
A quiet coffee before work.
An hour to read.
A family dinner.
A night where you're deliberately not making plans.
Even a small self-care ritual that gives you something to look forward to can change how a busy week feels.
When a week looks full, it's easy to see it as one long stretch of obligations.
Having something to look forward to reminds you that your week isn't simply a list of things you need to get through.
There are moments in there that can feel good too.
Most importantly, don't let Sunday prep become another thing you have to perform perfectly.
You don't need to meal prep seven lunches, clean the entire house, organise everyone's outfits, plan every workout and completely reinvent your life before bedtime.
Pick one thing.
Maybe two.
Then let that be enough.
Close the laptop. Put the list away. Make dinner. Watch something you love. Go for a walk. Sit outside.
Or make a little time for yourself with something from your Seasonal Retreat Box and let Sunday evening actually feel like part of the weekend.
Because the goal isn't to get rid of the Sunday scaries completely.
It's simply to give your brain a little reassurance that you've got things covered.
And remember, the anticipation is so often heavier than the thing itself.
Monday will come. You'll get up, you'll start, and you'll handle what needs handling one thing at a time.
A few small things done on Sunday might just help you arrive there feeling a little calmer, a little clearer and a lot less like the whole week is coming at you at once.
