We talk a lot about self-care. It's on our feeds, in our group chats, and there's no shortage of books and podcasts dedicated to it. And that's not a bad thing, it's genuinely important. But somewhere along the way it became a buzzword, something we say more than something we actually do. Friday was International Self-Care Day, which felt like the right moment to actually unpack it. What it actually looks like day to day, for people juggling real lives and not much spare time.
Self-care was never meant to be a big spa day booked every few months or a "treat" you earn after a hard week. It's maintenance. The small, unglamorous stuff you do daily, on repeat, whether the week's been good or brutal.
Here are some of our favourite ways to actually practise it:
Give yourself 5 minutes of silence. Before you reach for your phone, before the day starts pulling at you in six directions, just sit. No input, no scrolling, nothing to respond to yet. It sounds like nothing, and that's kind of the point. Your brain gets almost zero downtime otherwise, it's stimulation from the second your eyes open. A few quiet minutes lets you actually start your day, instead of reacting to it before you've even stood up.
Get outside before the day takes over. A minute in the sun, a short walk, whatever gets you outside before you're swept into meetings, kids, emails, whatever's waiting. Natural light first thing genuinely helps regulate your mood and energy for hours afterward, it's one of the few things that costs nothing and takes less time than making your coffee, but the effects last well past that.
Actually nourish yourself, not just refuel. It's easy to run on coffee and whatever's closest to hand when you're busy, we all do it. But what you eat shapes your energy and your mood more than we tend to give it credit for. This one's easy to overlook because the effects aren't instant, but they compound fast, for better or worse. It's not about "eating perfectly," it's about noticing when you're just refuelling versus actually looking after yourself.
Notice what you already do for yourself. You're probably practising self-care right now without calling it that. The tea you make properly instead of gulping down between tasks. The five minutes you steal before everyone else wakes up. The walk you take the long way on purpose. Noticing it, actually registering it as care, is what makes it count. Without the noticing, it's just something that happened, rather than something that helped.
Say no without guilt. This is the one people skip most, and it's arguably the most important. Winter, busy seasons, full calendars, they all ask more of us, and yet most of us keep saying yes and wondering why we feel depleted. Saying no to something, one thing, so you can actually show up for what matters, isn't selfish or lazy. You can't keep giving from a place of empty, and deep down, you probably already know that.
None of these are big. That's the whole point. Self-care doesn't need a full overhaul or a special occasion. Sometimes it's five minutes of quiet, a proper meal, or a no you didn't feel guilty about.
