5 ways to bring more play into your life (no justification needed)

We talk a lot about rest. Slowing down, resting, recovering. And that's genuinely useful. But somewhere along the way, fun stopped being allowed to just be fun.

These days, if we do something purely enjoyable, it needs a reason attached. A walk becomes exercise. A hobby becomes a side hustle. A game becomes "good for your brain". Enjoyment on its own, with no productive purpose, has started to feel almost indulgent.

Here are some of our favourite ways to bring a bit more play back in, no justification required:

Do something with no skill involved. Not a class, not a project, nothing you're trying to get better at. Just something silly and fun. The moment something needs to be "worth it" to count, it stops being play. Let it be pointless.

Say yes to something just because it sounds fun. Not because it's good for you, not because it'll help you unwind, not because you'll feel accomplished afterwards. Just because, in the moment, it sounds like fun. That's allowed to be the whole reason.

Do something you were good at as a kid. Drawing, dancing, building something, making up stories. It doesn't need to lead anywhere or turn into anything. The point isn't to get good at it again, it's remembering what doing something purely for enjoyment actually feels like.

Let yourself be a bit silly. Dance badly in the kitchen. Make a joke that's not that funny. Do the voice. Most of us have gotten so serious that being silly on purpose feels strange, which is exactly why it's worth doing.

Stop asking what the point is. Not everything needs a return on investment. If something's fun, that's the point. Full stop. You don't need it to also be productive, healing, or good for you to justify doing it.

None of these are big, and that's the point. Play doesn't need an occasion or a proper plan. Sometimes it's just ten minutes of doing something for absolutely no reason other than it made you laugh.
