On good friendships (and showing up for them)

Good friendships are one of the best things we get to have. The people who really know what's going on with you, who you can call without an agenda, who make the hard weeks survivable and the good ones even better, that's not a small thing. That's one of the things that actually makes a life feel good.

Friday was International Friendship Day, which felt like a nice excuse to sit with that for a minute. Not as a reminder to post something, but as a moment to appreciate the people who show up for you, and think about how we keep showing up for them too.

A few of the small things that help those bonds grow stronger:

Notice the small stuff. Anyone can turn up to a wedding. It's asking how the scan went, remembering the name of their annoying colleague, clocking that they've gone quiet, that's what actually builds something real. The in-between moments matter more than the big ones.

Let yourself be a bit of a mess in front of them. The best friendships are the ones where you don't have to perform. Where "I'm not okay today" doesn't need a five minute explanation first. Being fully known, mess and all, is one of the most comforting things a friendship can offer

Make time, even when it's tight. You don't need a free afternoon. Fifteen minutes on the phone while you're driving, or a walk instead of scrolling on the couch alone, adds up more than you'd think. Small and regular beats big and occasional, every time.

Say thanks for the people who show up. Not in a big way, just properly notice it. The friend who checks in without being asked. The one who remembers. Naming it, even just to yourself, is what turns it from something that happened into something that mattered.

None of this is complicated. That's the beauty of it. Sometimes the friendships that hold us up the most are built from nothing more than a text, a call, or fifteen honest minutes.
