5 Reasons Why You Need To Start Using A Natural Toothpaste Today

5 Reasons Why You Need To Start Using A Natural Toothpaste Today

We have been told and reminded how important brushing our teeth is since we were small, once in the morning and once at night – at the very least! And for so long we have been using the same old toothpaste that we have since our childhood – the ones we see advertised on TV that promise ‘ultra whitening’ ‘dentist approved’ toothpastes. Unfortunately for us, more and more evidence has surfaced that these commercial toothpastes may in fact do more harm than good. In the spirit of transparency, we thought it best to share 5 Reasons Why You Need To Start Using A Natural Toothpaste Today…

Sodium Fluoride

Dentists and doctors have touted the miraculous benefits of fluoride for years, however as you may know, there are many debates around the effectiveness and toxicity of this chemical compound. In one argument, it has been suggested that fluoride can help to prevent tooth decay by forming a protective layer on the teeth. On the other hand, fluoride has been linked by studies to brain damage, lower IQ in children, hyperactivity, bone cancer, genetic damage and other deleterious effects.

In our opinion, we reckon steer clear of using toothpastes including sodium fluoride.

Artificial Sweeteners

What many people don’t know is that toothpaste often contains artificial sweeteners and flavours that bring with them a whole range of potentially negative health effects. These health effects include induced sweet cravings that can lead to weight gain, increased risk of metabolic syndrome and even diabetes. Some toothpastes use more natural sweeteners such as Stevia or Xylitol, which mean they still taste sweet but don’t have the adverse effect on your health.

Preservatives

Similarly, preservatives are also in most commercial toothpastes and contain many of the same toxins as sweeteners do. And while we all know that we should avoid preservatives in food, it seems we have overlooked the very same ingredients in our toothpaste…

Sodium Laurel Sulfate

Sodium Laurel Sulfate is commonly found in shampoo, mouthwash, and dish detergent. If it’s in your home, foams, and cleans something, it likely contains SLS. And that means your toothpaste! According to Doctor Mark Burhenne and the Massachusetts Dental Society, not only does SLS increase mouth ulcers outbreaks and pain, but it actually breaks down the protective lining of your mouth, stripping away its underlying tissue, leaving your gums irritated and more prone to mouth ulcers. That’s right, those annoying uncomfortable mouth sores may actually be caused by your toothpaste! Switching to a natural alternative can alleviate this issue.

Harsh Chemicals

Who would have thought that toothpaste could in fact be the cause of sensitive teeth? Probably none of us, but it just might be true. This is because additional, harsher chemicals are used to reduce stains and not surprisingly these can wear down and damage the enamel of the tooth.

For these reasons and SO many more (we seriously could’ve gone on for days!) – like the fact that we don’t like to put anything in our mouths and on our skin that we wouldn’t eat, or pronounce – we have opted for natural toothpastes ourselves. Having found it difficult to find a good natural toothpaste, we did some serious research and found a home grown beauty, Grant’s Natural Toothpaste with no flouride, SLS or parabens. And much to our pleasant surprise it tasted…great! What’s not to love?
