Why I Don't Believe In Cyber Monday & What We're Doing Instead
Kate Williams
If you’re anything like me, you would’ve received 100’s of sales emails today! Hundreds and hundreds of brands discounting their products for ‘Cyber Monday’.
I’m all for brands having sales, don’t get me wrong. It’s just the reason behind Cyber Monday that makes me squirm a little.
Firstly, what is Cyber Monday? Cyber Monday is a day that follows Thanksgiving Day – a day mainly celebrated in America to give thanks to the many things you’re lucky enough to have.
Let’s take a moment to ponder that – a worldwide SALE that follows the day where you give THANKS for everything in your life… What the…?!
Many people spend Thanksgiving expressing their gratitude for all that they have, and the next day they’re rushing to the stores to buy MORE.
The thing is that those of us who are fortunate enough to have the financial ability to partake in these kinds of sales, are among some of the most privileged in the world (and we really are SO privileged, even if it may not seem like it). Yet there are SO many people that are worse off that can’t afford these luxuries.
So, instead of discounting our products, but knowing that it’s Christmas time and that people are going to shop anyway – I’ve decided to do something to give back. I’ve decided to do our own kind of Cyber Monday today by gifting one Retreat Yourself Box per order to ‘Share The Dignity – It’s in the bag’ Campaign (https://www.sharethedignity.com.au/christmas-charity/) – a campaign dedicated to collecting personal care items for women experiencing homelessness, poverty and domestic violence and delivering them to them for Christmas.
Share The Dignity delivers these packages to women who don’t have the privilege to indulge in Cyber Monday sales, Christmas, or have the money to purchase products to make them feel well – many of whom do not even have a family or a roof over their head.
We will continue donating a box for very box you purchase until Thursday December 30th, and will deliver the boxes to ‘Share The Dignity’ on Friday December 1st.
For $59.95 you can brighten up a woman’s life this Christmas.
Let’s join together and empower women across Australia, one box at a time!
‘It’s In The Bag’ Christmas charity campaign idea was thought of when the team atShare The Dignityrealised that women in crisis will put the needs of others before themselves, whatever the time of year. And they wanted to do something that would give these women a little happiness at Christmas.
There are 85,000 homeless women who need our help this Christmas. Many have fled domestic violence or experienced extreme poverty. We want to make them feel special. You can help. It’s simple and it makes a big difference in a woman’s life.
