Superfoods have been the talk of the town for a while now, having made their way into our pantries, on our cafe menus and in all the smoothies. We love them because they pack such a powerful punch of nutrition in a small and mighty package. A handful here, a tablespoon there and our meals go from drag to fab in a matter of seconds. The hardest part of consuming these superfoods however was actually finding them – until recently when they became available on supermarket shelves and online. The difficulty is now deciding which superfoods are worth investing in – and in an effort to help you get the most bang for your buck we decided to share our favourites and how we like to eat them.
Best known for its red-violet colour, it is no secret that beetroot is packed full of antioxidants, as well as disease fighting molecules preventing the growth of free radical damage in the body.
That’s not to mention that just one cup of beetroot contains about 3.5 grams of fiber – most of which is what we call “insoluble fiber” that aids healthy digestion and prevents constipation.
Beetroot has also been proven to enhance sports performance. This is because beets support the transportation of oxygen to our brain and blood to our muscles during periods of intense or physical activity.
Our favourite ways to enjoy the goodness of beetroot include; roasting it in the oven with a touch of olive oil, shredding it into salads and sprinkling beet powder into smoothies. Not only does beet powder boost the nutritional value of our smoothies, but also adds a beautiful pink colour.
2. Goji Berry
Like most other superfoods, goji berries are also an excellent source of antioxidants that help boost the immune system and protect the body from high levels of inflammation. They are also low in calories, fat-free and a great source of fiber, regulating digestion and even managing a healthy weight.
Usually eaten raw, dried or in powder form, the versatile goji berry contains a number of phytonutrients, vitamins and trace minerals that have so well earned the name of “superfood”.
Our favourite ways to enjoy goji berries are to include them in our homemade muesli and granolas, or add them into our trail mix – they add a delightful sweetness!
3. Camu Camu
In it’s natural state Camu Camu is a low-growing shrub found throughout the Amazon. It produces a lemon sized, reddish fruit with pulp that is packed full of more natural Vitamin C than any other food source on the planet. In addition the plant also contains impressive amounts of antioxidant, beta-carotene, potassium, calcium, iron, niacin, phosphorus and protein.
Thats not to mention that Camu Camu has also been shown to strengthen the immune and nervous system, and even act as an effective and safe antidepressant in some cases.
Today, Camu Camu is usually available in powder form, used in baking or raw treats – our favourite being a turmeric slice. However a more convenient option may be a readily prepared superfood blend that needs only be added to a smoothie. The Recovery Superfood Blend by Power Superfoods for example contains Beetroot, Goji Berry, Camu Camu and Wakame Leaf – to support and rebalance the body when it requires replenishment of vital nutrients with this carefully selected blend of plant-based ingredients.
Often known as the “healthy version of chocolate” Carob is used as a chocolate substitute in baking and sweets. What many people don’t know however is that carob and cacao come from two very different plants. Carob in particular contains naturally high levels of polyphenols that support healthy cholesterol levels and contain potent antioxidants protecting the body from free radicals and environmental toxins.
It is not hard to guess our favourite way to enjoy carob – as chocolate of course!
Maqui berry is filled with antioxidants, which help to slow down premature ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles, while nourishing skin cells and supporting radiant, youthful skin.
Another surprising quality of the Maqui berry are the anti diabetic properties that balance blood glucose levels and have been shown to benefit diabetes treatment.
Should you feel tired or lethargic – Maqui berry should do the trick! These amazing berries boost your metabolism and give your body a new found stamina, also helping to kick-start digestion, which in turn leads to proper release of energy.
There are several ways you can use Maqui berry, including mixing the juice into beverages or adding the powder to smoothies, desserts, or cereal. Our powder of choice is the Immunity Blend from Power Superfoods which combines Maqui berry with Baobab, Acerola, Tasmanian Pepperberry.
When it comes to superfoods there is no denying that we love a tasty and convenient solution, and so when a superfood powder is made available that we can afford, throw into our smoothies and know that it will taste even more delicious, you know we’re bound to get experimenting with all the best flavours.
