Summer always brings sunshine, heat and a greater chance of dehydration. It is also important to remember that not only can our insides be affected by this change in season but our skin as well. Over-exposure to the sun, increased physical activity and not drinking enough water can all contribute to dull, dry skin as well as internal dehydration.
Unfortunately many of us underestimate the importance of hydration in summer. For example, did you know that your body is composed of 65 percent water? Most of it located within your cells. And that’s not to mention that good hydration improves the following; regulation of body temperature, function of the kidneys, skin quality, weight loss, joint and muscle lubrication, and overall mood.
Drink More Water
Most nutritionists recommend drinking 8 - 10 large glasses of water a day, but when we are active or spending time outside on a hot day, you'll generally find your body requires more. Some may require 3L or more depending on activity levels. The easiest way to manage your water intake? Take a 1L water bottle with you everywhere: to work, to school, in the car and to the gym, and aim to knock out 3 refills per day.
Use A Natural Moisturiser
Spending hours in the sun whether that be swimming, walking or tanning, takes a toll on our skin - often leaving it dry and in serious need of moisturiser…or coconut oil. Hydrating moisturisers with only natural ingredients will do just that, without the risk of synthetic ingredients drying out your skin.
Use A Face Spray
Spending long days in air con or outside? Look no further than the Babe Cucumber Face Spritz. Packed with cucumber water and a hit of Vitamin B-5 this mist is the perfect remedy for dull, tired skin - DURING the day. That’s not to mention that Pentavitin, which is a hydration powerhouse, has been added to the formula to ensure lush, soft skin. Simply spritz yourself 1-2 times between your morning & night moisturisers for re-invigorated, hydrated skin!
Eat Water-Rich Foods
Many of us don’t know that water-rich foods can actually be just as hydrating for our body (and skin) as drinking H2O. It is for this reason that fruits and veggies such as berries, watermelon, plums, peaches, cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, and lettuce — are great choices throughout the warmer months.
Wear Sunscreen
Frequent exposure to UV rays can weaken and dry our skin surprisingly quickly and harshly. Simply wearing sunscreen and re-applying it periodically throughout the day, can drastically decrease these damaging effects.
There’s no denying that our skin is an important part of our overall health, and that women in particular find cause to worry about its appearance during our lifetime. It can be relieving for some of us to know however that staying hydrated and looking after our skin by using face spray, wearing sunscreen and eating certain foods can have a positive effect on the appearance and health of our skin. And so we hope that you too take some comfort in the fact that these five simple tips really can make a difference in the vibrance and health of your skin - and protect you from this season’s harsh sun.
