Your skin cells are mainly made of water, so no matter your skin type or skin concern, it needs hydration – and lots of it – to keep functioning properly and looking its best.
Your skin loses water throughout the day due to evaporation, physical activity, and external factors such as weather and exposure to heating and air-conditioning, so frequent hydration is crucial.
There is no evidence that drinking water can rehydrate your skin, so a hydrating skincare regime is what’s required – water-rich formulations featuring active ingredients to quench thirsty skin.
How to tell if your skin is dry or dehydrated
Dehydrated skin in particular needs water to boost, plump, and freshen. How can you tell if your skin is dehydrated?
Dehydrated skin lacks water. It can show up as a lack of firmness, a dull complexion, and a rougher skin texture. Fine lines are more noticeable, because your skin lacks the moisture it needs to plump and smooth.
The condition can come and go, and is made worse by lifestyle factors like weather, pollution, and ageing. It’s likely that all of us will suffer from dehydrated skin at some point.
Dry skin, on the other hand, is rarer. It’s classified as a skin type, so it’s fixed and is often genetic. Dry skin occurs if your skin lacks natural oils, resulting in flaky, dry patches and irritation.
Natural, water-rich formulations
To boost hydration levels and improve the health and appearance of your complexion, a skin hydrating regime featuring ultra-clean, water-rich formulations is key.
A serum is a very good place to start, because the light molecular weight of serums means they can be absorbed into the skin, to deliver a concentrated dose of nutrients. Serums are invisible beneath moisturisers, sunscreen, and makeup, so they are easy to include in any regime.
How to find the best hydrating serum
Look for a hydrating serum that is water-based – it easily penetrates the skin, so it gets to work quickly. Apply 3-4 drops to your face, using the palms of your hands to gently press into your skin.
Follow with any heavier serums in your regime, if using, and your moisturiser.
Lush, pollution-free New Zealand nature provides some of skincare’s most effective hydrators.
Hosanna H₂O Intensive Skin-Plumping Serum features the water-rich mamaku black fern, one of New Zealand’s most iconic plants. It produces a polysaccharide – a sugar-like substance – to encourage skin cell renewal and support collagen levels.
Hosanna also contains antioxidant-rich Vinanza® Grape extract, from grapes with some of the world’s highest levels of polyphenolic antioxidants, which helps with skin elasticity and firmness.
The serum is feather-light, so sinks into skin without residue and is easy to layer with the rest of your regime. Not only is it certified vegan, but it’s certified organic as well.
Hosanna has been scientifically shown to stimulate the synthesis of Type I collagen in-vitro by up to 72%*, so it gives a boost to fine lines and tired skin as plumps, smooths, and hydrates.
