Our Top Winter Detox Tips Revealed...

Our Top Winter Detox Tips Revealed...

When we talk Detox we’re usually thinking about ‘Spring Cleaning’ and ‘Getting Fit For Summer’ but what if we were to treat ourselves with this same level of care and attention during the winter months, would we be able to keep our summer bodies all year long? Well evidence suggest that we can and that with some clever methods of detoxification we can look and feel as light, healthy and energised as we do in the summer months.

Our favourite detoxification methods include the following….

Juicing & Soups

With the changing of seasons, your body becomes more vulnerable to the elements as new weather conditions shock the immune system and leave it more susceptible to illness. In the winter particularly, the air is colder and drier, and it’s often only a matter of time before we catch the sniffles. That’s why it is so important to focus on immune boosting foods. One of the easiest and most effective ways to boost your body’s immunity is to consume high amounts of fruit and vegetables juices and slow-cooked soups. These meals (or snacks) offer a high concentration of detoxifying elixirs that quite literally flood your blood cells with nutrition and improve their ability to fight off the winter flu.

Avoiding Toxins

One of the quickest ways to destroy your body’s immune response and its ability to fight illness is exposure to chemical toxins, whether that be through what we put in our mouth, what we put on our skin or the environment that we expose ourselves to. Traditional toothpaste, for example, contains a high concentration of acids and chemicals that many people cannot pronounce let alone recognise. While we once thought that these were beneficial to the health of our teeth we are now learning about the dangers of using traditional toothpaste and its effect on the health of our mouths and gut. Thankfully brands like Redseal (www.redseal.co.nz) have developed a range of toothpastes from all-natural ingredients that maintain healthy white teeth and gums, fresh breath – without added fluoride. So do your mouth, teeth, gums, and immune system a favour and skip the nasties.

Taking Charcoal Powder

Charcoal Powder and Activated Charcoal Products have come into vogue recently with many companies endorsing the use of products to detoxify the skin, aid digestion and improve the health of your mouth and gums.

Oil pulling for example is an ancient practice originating from Indian Ayurvedic medicine and used to detoxify the mouth and body, and if you have been reading any wellness news lately you would know that this ancient practice is fast gaining popularity all over the world. The power of it is that not only does oil pulling with activated charcoal cleanse your mouth but it also naturally whitens your teeth and gives you a killer smile without the added fluoride hidden in regular mouthwash. Our favourite source of Activated Charcoal is the people at Keeko Oil (www.keekooil.com) who have patented a product made of only natural and the highest quality ingredients; that keeps us smiling all year round.

Practicing Mindfulness

Mindfulness is often mistaken for meditation, and when it comes to telling people to ‘Sit, Be Still and Meditate” you can understand their reluctance.…We prefer the term mindfulness; because for the vast majority of people intimidated by or disinterested in meditation; prayer, yoga, belly breathing, cooking or even cleaning are all activities that when done in a mindful state consciously clear the mind of stressful thoughts and elevate anxiety in a very similar way.

We recommend practicing mindfulness in winter because well, it can be quite easy to get caught up in all of the negatives and start re-acting to the world around us rather than responding. When we operate from a more mindful place we are able to catch ourselves one step or second before we sound the horn, make a sly remark or banish the wind, instead we are able to recognise the source of that discomfort and maybe even feel empathy for the angry man who cut us off who’s obviously haver a bad day. You don’t need to be sitting still to be mindful, in fact it is usually more insightful to bring this awareness to your daily activities and watch your experience transform. Go ahead, we dare you…

By implementing these nutritional and lifestyle detox measures into your winter regime you will not only be feeling lighter and more clear, but you may even find an appreciation for this snowy season; and maybe even the energy to hit the slopes…
