Topical vs Aromatically - How To Use Essential Oils

With a wide range of emotional and physical benefits there's a lot of hype around essential oils and with good reason! 

If you're new to the world of essential oils and are wondering what all the fuss is about, well these natural oils are a very concentrated form of the healing aromatic compounds made from plants.

But how can you use these wonderful bottles of goodness?

The most common ways to use essential oils are aromatically or topically and these methods are safe when used appropriately, but be sure to read the labels on each bottle and even pop onto the ECO. Modern Essentials website to learn more about the different properties of oils. 


A diffusor is one of the easiest and quickest ways to use essential oils aromatically.

When using a diffusor essential oils are quickly absorbed by our smell receptors, which is linked to the limbic system. This is the part of our brain that supports a variety of functions including smell, emotion, behaviour and memory.

For this reason, essential oils have an especially powerful effect via aromatic application and when we're feeling a cold coming on we always pop a few drops of the Sinus Clear blend (found in our Winter Box) into our diffuser to breathe easier. 

If you don't have a diffusor you can get the same effect by smelling the oils directly from the bottle, add a few drops to a bowl of hot water, cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam or put a few drops into a spray bottle of water to mist in your home. 


There are different essential oils to treat different ailments and applying these to your skin is an effective method as once the oils are absorbed through the skin they enter into the blood stream and carry the healing molecules throughout the body.

A great way to absorb these oils is through a full body massage but you may need to dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil (such as coconut oil) if you have sensitive skin as the oils are a concentrated substance and could cause skin irritation.

You can also create a beautiful and relaxing foot bath which will help to relieve the days aches or even by making a hot or cold compress by soaking a towel or cloth in water, adding essential oils, and then applying to the desired area.
