Are you exfoliating correctly? Here's a how-to...

You already know how important exfoliating is. Using an exfoliator correctly will remove the junk clogging your skin, buff away dead skin cells, and improve the effectiveness of your other skincare products.

But do you genuinely know how to exfoliate?

Too much of a good thing can happen, especially when it comes to exfoliating! Many people are not quite sure how to truly exfoliate, which may result in over-exfoliating and damaging your gorgeous skin.

So we asked our friends from Alya Skin how to REALLY exfoliate and here's what they have to share...

Alya Exoliator

Pick an exfoliator with the right ingredients.
When picking an exfoliator, look for one containing zero nasties, gentle on the skin, and offering targeted benefits. Exfoliators with harsh chemicals can irritate and damage the skin, and strip the skin of natural and oils disrupting the lipid barrier.

Start with a clean face.
Always cleanse your skin first, so you avoid spreading makeup, dirt, and other impurities around. This will also allow any active ingredients that might be in your chosen exfoliator to get deeper into the skin and work their magic.

Gently rub in circular motions.
Gently massage the exfoliator around your face in small, circular strokes for about 20 seconds. You don't need to rub hard, as the product will do the scrubbing for you. Make sure to avoid your eyebrows and eye area!

Rinse with warm water & pat dry.
Using hot water and rubbing your face with a towel can irritate your freshly exfoliated face. Avoid irritation by using warm water to rinse away the product and gently patting your skin dry with a soft towel.

Follow with your fave products.
Exfoliated skin is perfectly primed and ready for your fav products to absorb into the skin deeply, be it a serum, moisturiser, or mask.

Only exfoliate every 2-3 days.
Over-exfoliating can leave you with raw, red, and damaged skin. To truly get the benefits of exfoliating, be sure only to exfoliate every 2-3 days.

Now you are equipped with expert knowledge, go and get your exfoliating on!
