The sacred Tulsi herb is the very foundation of ORGANIC INDIA, where it is revered, cherished and grown organically by their dedicated team of small family farmers, using regenerative agricultural practices.
While it's highly cherished many, it's a relatively unknown herb to us. So we asked our friends at ORGANIC INDIA to tell us more about Tulsi, its origins and benefits...
What is Tulsi?
Tulsi is also known as Holy Basil and considered ‘The Queen of Herbs’ in Ayurveda, the traditional medicine system of India. There are said to be 108 varieties of Tulsi, each with a slightly different look, taste and smell, and when combined, create a perfectly balanced herbal infusion with an array of health benefits for the body, mind and spirit.
An adaptogenic herb
Modern research has classified Tulsi as an adaptogenic herb. This means Tulsi is literally on a mission to bring the body to homeostasis, or balance, to restore and protect the body. Adaptogens - such as Tulsi - assist us to handle external stressors, or situations, in a more harmonious way. They help ground us so we are better equipped to respond to whatever life throws at us every day, whether it’s a hectic schedule, challenging relationship, financial worries, general anxiety or poor diet. Tulsi’s adaptogenic compounds are known for rebalancing our adrenal hormones, assisting our bodies to recover from adrenal fatigue by lowering cortisol, the stress hormone.
Three of the 108 varieties of Tulsi with the most potent adaptogenic, antioxidant and immune stimulating properties include:
- Rama Tulsi (Ocimum sactum)
- Vana Tulsi (Ocimum gratissimum)
- Krishna Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum)
These are all featured throughout the ORGANIC INDIA Tulsi herbal tea collection. As a tonic that offers solutions to many modern-day health complaints, daily consumption of Tulsi is said to prevent disease (immune-supporting), and promote general health, wellbeing and longevity.
Divine Tulsi
Tulsi is worshipped as a goddess in Hinduism, every part of the herb is sacred. You’ll find Tulsi given the place of honour directly in front of temples and homes for not only its restorative properties, but spiritual and ceremonial as well. Tulsi, planted in its ornate earthen pot, is integral to daily morning and evening rituals and other spiritual and purification practices that can include ingesting its leaves or consuming Tulsi tea.
Tulsi is Liquid Yoga
Regular consumption of Tulsi has even been compared with the regular practice of yoga! Like yoga, Tulsi has a calming effect that leads to clarity of thought, along with a more relaxed and calm disposition. It nurtures and nourishes the body-mind-spirit.
Tulsi really is nature’s perfect (and delicious) answer to rejuvenation!
